Supriya Shah

Currently working as a Lecturer in Sitar in the Department of Instrumental Music, Faculty of Performing Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Supriya Shah is a Gold Medalist in M.A. (Hindustani Music) from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University and topper in M. Phil (Hindustani Music) examination. She has been awarded the Junior Research Fellowship in Music by the University Grants Commission in the year 2005. She is currently pursuing the Doctoral course in Hindustani Music at the Faculty of Music and Fine arts, University of Delhi.

She received her initial training in sitar under Shri Satish Chandra, a well-known sitarist of Kanpur and a disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar. Since 1995, she has been undergoing training in the rigid grammar of music and the advanced techniques of sitar under the able guidance of the internationally acclaimed sitar maestro Pt. Uma Shankar Mishra.

She has been performing at various prestigious forums and in competitions at regional, national and international levels. All her performances have been greatly appreciated by the audiences. Some of her noteworthy achievements include the award of National Scholarship in Classical Music by the Ministry of HRD, Department of Culture, in the year 2000, First prize at the prestigious All India Radio Music competition in the age group of 18 to 24 years in the year 2002 and performing in Allahabad in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2004.

  • Conducted research and submitted thesis on “An Aesthetical Study of the compositions of the Maihar Gharana” as part of M.Phil curriculum.
  • Assisted in the preparation of the catalogue of musical instruments for VADYA DARSHAN (an Exhibition of Indian Musical Instruments) organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi from March 21 to April3, 2002
